ABOUT

Symbol Shift was formerly a collection of friends on the West Coast who would do just about anything to get paid. Anything involving audio, video, print and web and the design, production, programming and general distortion of those things. We each specialized in different areas but found a lot of overlap in our work. We collaborated on many projects big and small. Most miraculously of all, we managed to somehow pay rent and eat.

Now, several years later, we’ve established ourselves and look back fondly on those late nights spent pounding out lines of hurried code and cursing the reboots when Illustrator would suddenly quit because we had run out of RAM. We relished the moments of inspiration that set us on a six hour caffeine-fueled creative marathon. However, we spent a lot of that time Googling for shortcuts and answers to arcane problems. After projects were done we would invariably discuss how we could have done some things differently or saved time with the approach we eventually found. It turns out we fucked up a lot along the way but end up producing some nice things.

So now that we can pay our iPhone bills on time we don’t need Symbol Shift the company. Instead, we’d like to share the things we have discovered. Things that will save others time, prevent them from making mistakes or perhaps even inspire them. You won’t find the next light box javascript or a mind-blowing VST. Instead you’ll get our observations, approaches, and most likely a lot of links to pages we spent many hours googling along the way.

Feel free to browse, search and comment for all manner of things here. If you like what you see, let us know. If we fucked up again, let the whole internet know. Either way, these are the things we make.
